We deeply acknowledge the persistent work of the Food Bank team, which aims to raise awareness among the participants of the food chain, so that the surplus they produce is spend to provide food for the needy instead of destroying it. Only in the European Union, 88 million tonnes of food is wasted year by year wich equals to 173 kg food surplus per capita. This fact has not only economical consequences but also harmful for the environment. Producing food surplus not only leads to waste our valuable resources such as water or solar energy but it produces more waste and generates 170 million tons of CO2. The lack of information is also a serious issue: according to the Eurobarometer survey, only half of people know what "best before" or "expiry date" means on products. However the problem is moral: many people are starving or do not have to possibility to have regular food around the world while hills of waste food are created every day and the third of the global food production goes into garbage. In the European Union food surplus is produced on every step of the food chain from the agricultural production until the households. More than half of it is generated in households, but consumers often do not know the problems they cause. The Food Bank is working hard to distribute food surpluses for those who need it most.
